Senator Gillibrand Urges Action on Equal Pay at Girls Inc. Headquarter
Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) held a press conference today at Girls Inc. headquarters to urge the U.S. Senate to move forward on the Paycheck Fairness Act, which seeks to remedy wage disparity and pay discrimination for women. The act would not only empower women to negotiate equal pay, but would also teach girls how to acquire equitable jobs and pay.
Currently, a woman only makes 78 cents for every dollar a man earns, which has led to a $200 billion loss every year for America’s working families. That’s $4,000 each year for every working woman’s family.
Senator Gillibrand was joined by Girls Inc. leaders and representatives of the Equal Pay Coalition NYC, a consortium of civic organizations, advocates, and experts working together for pay equity in New York.
